Twin Oaks Club is no stranger to racing on the Quincy Bay. For nearly 3 decades they hosted power boat races. These races were held on the annual Booster Day, a fund raising event for the club. Over the years the bay silted in making it impossible to race power boats at the club.
In the winter of 2016, there was mention of having kayak races in the bay, and in front of the club. “It would be an ideal spot, it’s shallow and protected from the current of the main river. The bay, in front of the club, is large enough for a 1 mile course and spectators could see the whole race form the comfort of the club facilities.”
The Quincy area has sold a large number of kayaks in the past couple years. Quincy Farm & Home, Dick’s Sporting Goods, Walmart, and other area sources have seen large growth in the sales of kayaks, and kayaking equipment.
Twin Oaks Club, had never put on this type of race, and had no experience with kayak races. So, they approached us (Quincy 5 Miler), to partner with them. We have been on the river and running these type races for the past 5 years. With the race being held the Sunday before our races, we had to partner with Twin Oaks Club, and draw more interest for paddling sports on the Mississippi River at Quincy, Illinois.
